The Riesling is a noble grape that originated in the Moselle and is only expressed in a few areas of Italy. One such place is the Alta Langa, where Riesling has been experimented with since 1975. Tenuta Carretta revived this project with the planting of the Campofranco vineyard, located in Cissone at 630 meters altitude. The name refers to the revival of an area that had long lain fallow.
The 2.74-acre vineyard rests on soft sedimentary soils of marine origin – clay, calcareous marl, tuff and sandstone – in contrast to the rocky, shallow soils of the Mosel. The northern orientation is a deliberate choice: it protects the vines from the drought and heat of the southwestern side, thus better retaining moisture. Combined with the altitude, this results in delayed ripening, pronounced acidity and remarkable elegance.
After harvesting in early October, the grapes are gently pressed with a pneumatic press and several hours of peeling follows. Fermentation takes place at 16°C in stainless steel, followed by eight months of aging on fine lees. Then the wine rests in bottle for at least 18 months.
The result is a golden yellow wine with green nuances, aromas of minerality, green apple and dried flowers, a spicy finish and a lively, savory flavor structure. Elegant, refined and with exceptional personality.
Serving temperature: 10-12 °C
