Schloss Englar

About the winery

Discover the essence of Schloss Englar wines, where history meets tradition in every bottle.

Originally from Tyrol, the Khuen-Belasi family has a rich aristocratic history spanning centuries across regions such as Lower Austria, Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia. Their lineage dates back to 1111, with the first mention of Egon von Tramin. The family name evolved from his courageous great-grandson, which earned him the title "Kühne" or "The Courageous."

In 1368 Arnoldus married Elisabeth von Belasi, uniting the Khuen and Belasi families and creating the Khuen-Belasi line. They filled prominent roles in the Habsburg monarchy for generations.

Englar Castle, their ancestral home, was a summer residence from 1870. Neglected after World War II, it underwent restoration in 1955 by Ernst Khuen-Belasi and his wife. Today, the castle is open year-round as a hotel, managed by their son, John Earl Khuen-Belasi.

Englar Castle

The castle

The family is in the privileged position of owning the largest vineyard in the beautiful Appiano mountain area, and it is here that they are committed to making the most of nature. The cornerstones of their vineyard philosophy are organic vineyard management, conservation of natural plant and animal diversity, and a watchful eye for the challenges of the future.

Tucked away amid sun-drenched vineyards, Schloss Englar Castle stands as a majestic tribute to time. Its Gothic gabled roof reflects the steep slopes of the surrounding vineyards, where vines have thrived under the South Tyrolean sun for centuries. With more than 1,700 hours of sunshine a year, their vineyards are blessed with the perfect climate and soil, which nurture grapes imbued with character and complexity.

Organic

Schloss Englar's commitment to organic practices ensures a harmonious balance between ripeness and freshness. With natural plant and animal diversity preserved, each vineyard thrives in its unique ecosystem, yielding grapes of unparalleled quality. As the largest single vineyard in the Appiano Mountains, Schloss Englar embraces the challenges of the future while honoring the traditions of the past.

In their cellar, magic unfolds as grapes transform into pure, authentic wines. With minimal intervention and addition-free processes, Schloss Englar wines undergo careful barrel aging and lees contact, resulting in a symphony of flavors that enchants the senses. The vineyards

Tucked away in gently exposed areas to the east and south, Schloss Englar's vineyards extend over altitudes ranging from 450 to 550 meters above sea level. Here the soil structure, characterized by limestone gravel and weathered porphyry soil, combined with the hilly terrain, provides optimal conditions for viticulture. Strong day-night temperature fluctuations further enhance the quality of our grapes, resulting in wines of unparalleled excellence.

The estate covers a total of 13 hectares, 10 of which are vineyards.
