Schloss Englar

About the winery

Discover the essence of Schloss Englar wines, where history meets tradition in every bottle.

Originally from Tyrol, the Khuen-Belasi family has a rich aristocratic history spanning centuries across regions such as Lower Austria, Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia. Their lineage dates back to 1111, with the first mention of Egon von Tramin. The family name evolved from his courageous great-grandson, which earned him the title “Kühne” or “The Courageous.”

In 1368 Arnoldus married Elisabeth von Belasi, uniting the Khuen and Belasi families and creating the Khuen-Belasi line. They filled prominent roles in the Habsburg monarchy for generations.

Englar Castle, their ancestral home, was a summer residence from 1870. Neglected after World War II, it underwent restoration in 1955 by Ernst Khuen-Belasi and his wife. Today, the castle is open year-round as a hotel, managed by their son, John Earl Khuen-Belasi.

The castle

The family is in the privileged position of owning the largest vineyard in the beautiful Appiano mountain region, and it is here that they do everything they can to get the best out of nature. The cornerstones of their vineyard philosophy are organic vineyard management, preserving the natural diversity of plants and animals, and keeping a watchful eye on the challenges of the future.

Tucked away among the sun-drenched vineyards, Schloss Englar Castle stands as a majestic tribute to time. Its Gothic gabled roof mirrors the steep slopes of the surrounding vineyards, where vines have thrived for centuries under the South Tyrolean sun. With over 1,700 hours of sunshine per year, their vineyards are blessed with the perfect climate and soil, nurturing grapes that are imbued with character and complexity.

The vineyards

Hidden in gently lit areas in the east and south, the vineyards of Schloss Englar stretch across elevations ranging from 450 to 550 meters above sea level. Here, the soil structure, characterized by limestone gravel and weathered porphyry soil, combined with the hilly terrain, provides optimal conditions for viticulture. Strong day-night temperature fluctuations further enhance the quality of our grapes, resulting in wines of unparalleled excellence.

The estate covers a total of 13 hectares, 10 of which are vineyards.
